Gue baru aja ngebaca artikel tentang fax.

Dan gue langsung mikir..

Jujur aja, terakhir kali gue lihat mesin fax itu pas gue masih SD.

Itu pun cuma lihat dari jauh, di kantor ayah gue dulu. Bentuknya besar, agak serem, kayak mesin dari masa lalu gitu.

Sekarang orang-orang pada pake email, WhatsApp, Google Drive, semua serba digital. Jadi gue pikir fax udah punah.

Tapi ternyata enggak.

Di artikel yang gue baca, fax itu ternyata masih dipakai di banyak kantor, terutama kantor-kantor besar. Terus terang gue agak kaget.

Tapi makin gue baca, makin gue ngerti kenapa.

Fax Itu Apa Sih Sebenarnya?

Oke, kita mulai dari awal.

Fax itu singkatan dari Faksimile. Mesin ini gunanya buat ngirim dokumen lewat jaringan telepon.

Jadi begini caranya:

Dokumen asli dipindai dulu sama mesin. Terus hasil pindaian itu diubah jadi semacam kode digital (bitmap). Nah, kode itu dikirim lewat sinyal suara ke jaringan telepon. Sampai di tempat tujuan, mesin fax di sana nerima sinyalnya, lalu ngeprint dokumennya.

Keren juga ya kalau dipikir-pikir. Teknologi yang udah ada sejak tahun 1980-an ini masih jalan aja sampai sekarang.

Yang bikin gue penasaran, kok bisa? Padahal teknologi udah jauh lebih canggih.

Terus gue baca lagi dan nemu beberapa alasan.

Kenapa Fax Masih Bertahan?

• Bisa Langsung Print. Kalau kita kirim dokumen lewat email, kita harus download dulu, terus print sendiri. Kalau pake fax, dokumen langsung keluar dari mesin. Udah jadi kertas. Selesai. Nggak ribet.
• Gampang. Ini penting banget buat orang-orang yang nggak terlalu tech-savvy. Tinggal masukin kertas, pencet tombol, selesai. Nggak perlu login, nggak perlu ngecek spam, nggak perlu download.
• Nomor Telepon. Setiap mesin fax punya nomor telepon sendiri. Jadi pengirimannya langsung, kayak nelpon. Nggak perlu nunggu, nggak perlu koneksi internet.

Nah yang menarik, mesin fax sekarang udah banyak yang jadi satu paket sama printer. Jadi dalam satu mesin, ada printer, scanner, fotokopi, sama fax. Praktis banget kan?

Merek-merek kayak Epson, Canon, Brother udah banyak yang bikin printer multifungsi gini.

Perbedaan Fax, Telepon, dan Email

Di artikelnya juga dijelasin bedanya fax sama telepon.

Kalau telepon itu ngirim suara.

Kalau fax ngirim data dokumen.

Tapi dua-duanya pake jaringan telepon.

Gue jadi mikir, dulu orang bisa nelpon pake mesin fax nggak ya? Ternyata bisa!

Kata artikelnya, kita bisa pake fax buat nelpon asal pake headset. Terus kita pencet tombol "9" untuk sambung ke jaringan luar, terus dial nomornya. Tapi kalau nggak pake headset, suaranya nggak bakal kedengeran. Lucu juga ya.

Trus bedanya sama email?

Email itu lebih fleksibel. Bisa kirim ulang kalau salah. Lebih murah. Lebih modern.

Tapi fax punya keunggulan di kecepatan dan kepastian. Begitu dikirim, langsung terima. Nggak ada istilah "masuk spam" atau "emailnya nggak kebaca".

Gue sih ngerti kenapa beberapa perusahaan masih pake fax. Mungkin buat urusan administrasi yang butuh kepastian. Atau buat dokumen-dokumen penting yang harus segera diproses.

Tapi gue juga sadar, makin ke sini fax makin jarang dipakai.

Pernah nggak sih lo lihat mesin fax di kantor lo? Atau di kampus? Atau di tempat lo kerja?

Kalau gue pribadi sih udah lama banget nggak liat. Mungkin udah pada disembunyiin. Atau disimpan di gudang. Atau... emang udah nggak ada.

Entahlah.

Mungkin teknologi itu nggak selalu tentang yang terbaru. Kadang yang lama tapi terbukti ampuh, ya tetep aja dipake.

Mungkin suatu hari nanti fax bakal bener-bener punah. Tapi kayaknya hari ini belum.

Dan gue jadi mikir, apa nantinya teknologi-teknologi yang kita pake sekarang bakal sama kayak fax? Jadi "jadul" tapi masih dipakai sebagian orang?

Mungkin.

Atau mungkin nggak.

Yang pasti, sekarang gue jadi lebih ngerti soal fax. Padahal awalnya gue cuma iseng baca artikel doang.
